DESIRABLE PCGS/CAC AU58+ 1842-D SMALL DATE HALF EAGLE
Variety 7-E.
The 1842-D Small Date is the more available of the two varieties of half eagle made by the Dahlonega mint in this year. While as many as 275-325 are known, most are in lower grades and any piece approaching the Uncirculated level is rare and in demand.
This attractive Gem Slider example has the appearance of an MS61 to MS62 and it shows just the slightest hint of friction on the cheek. The luster is typically semi-grainy in texture with light natural orange-gold color seen on both sides. The eye appeal of this coin is well above average for the date and this is one of the nicer 1842-D Small Date half eagles which I have offered for sale in some time.
Only two APR's are found for this date in AU58 since 2004 and they are for the same coin: $6,463 in January 2013 and $6,900 in April 2011.
Uncirculated examples of this date are nearly impossible to find and the present piece is likely more attractive than one in MS60 or even MS61 were it available.
CAC has approved three in AU58, one in AU58+ and one finer (MS62).
