CHOICE PCGS/CAC MS62 1806 ROUND 6 HALF EAGLE
BD-6, R-2. Knobbed 6 in date.
Two distinct varieties of 1806 half eagle exist: the scarce Pointed 6 and the more available Knobbed or Round 6. This latter variety is one of the most available dates in the Capped Bust Right type and it is popular for type purposes for that reason. It becomes scarce in properly grades MS62 to MS63 and is rare above this.
This is a very choice example for the date and grade with far more originality present than what is normally seen in MS62 holders. The "skin" is intact and fully visible below a layer of antique gold color. There are some light, grade-limiting scuffs on the obverse while the reverse, considered by itself, is at least an MS63. No adjustment marks can be seen and the strike is bold for this issue.
No CAC approved 1806 Round 6 half eagle graded MS62 by PCGS has sold at auction in recent years. Heritage 10/15: 3511 sold for $21,150 and it was not as choice, in my opinion, as the present piece.
An important early half eagle.
CAC has approved 15 in this grade with 35 finer.
