Coin Description
VERY CHOICE AU 1800 HALF EAGLE
BD-4, R-4. Blunt 1; no cud on the reverse as often seen.
The 1800 is not only a neat date as the first half eagle from the 19th century, it is also somewhat scarcer although it gets no price separation from other dates such as the 1802/1 and the 1803/2. AU examples are not rare but most have a gruesome appearance as a result of sojourns to Coin Doctor’s Labs or other mishandling.
This uncommonly mark-free slider shows nice green-gold color with contrasting deeper hues on the relief details. It is very lightly worn with just a smattering on rub in the fields and the strike is sharp for the date and variety with mostly full centers. Two light vertical adjustment marks at the central reverse are not detracting and the overall appearance is really excellent with quite a bit of character.
The only PCGS AU58 to sell at auction since 2010 realized $10,575 as Heritage 1/16: 6437. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval sold for $14,100 as Heritage 2/16: 3372.
Early gold is currently in strong demand and I have seen a virtual drying-up of the available supply on collector quality pieces in the last two to three years.
