Coin Description
DESIRABLE “SLIDER’ 1848-D QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
Variety 10-N.
The 1848-D is among the more available quarter eagles from this mint and it can be located in grades up to AU53 to AU55 without much difficulty. It is very scarce in properly graded AU58, especially with natural color and undisturbed surfaces. In Uncirculated, it is very rare.
This sharply detailed “slider” has a much nicer appearance than other 1848-D quarter eagles which I have seen in MS61 holders. It shows nearly full luster and only minor rub, confined to the high spots on the obverse. Both sides show warm, natural reddish-gold color which adds much appeal. There is one small diagonal mark on the reverse behind the eagle’s head which does not detract.
Heritage 6/15: 4196, graded AU58 by PCGS and approved by CAC, sold for $4,495.
It has become very hard to locate nice, CAC approved Dahlonega quarter eagles in AU58 for less than $5,000.
CAC has approved six in AU58 with only one finer (MS63).
