CAC APPROVED AU53 1858-S DOUBLE EAGLE

Ex "Granite Lady" Hoard

The 1858-S is one of the few San Francisco double eagles struck from 1855-S through 1865-S whose rarity profile hasn't been severely affected by shipwrecks. It is most often seen in the EF45 to AU53 range and it is rare in Uncirculated. Most of the coins graded AU53 are conspicuously abraded and have been cleaned or dipped.

This very nice Choice AU example shows deep, natural orange-gold toning over lustrous, lightly marked surfaces. I have seen inferior 1858-S double eagles in AU55 holders.

The last AU53 1858-S double eagle with CAC approval to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which brought $4,113 as Stacks Bowers 3/15: 448.

CAC has approved 36 in this grade with 36 finer.
