EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION CENSUS 1906-O EAGLE

While rare in properly graded MS63, this numismatically significant issue (it is the final eagle made at this facility) is rare in Gem. I am aware of a half dozen coins at most which are full MS65 or better and the last Gem to hit the market was an NGC MS65 that realized $26,150 as Heritage 10/14: 5029.

This fresh-to-the-market example comes from Europe where it had doubtless resides for the last century. It is a borderline Gem with unmarked surfaces, razor sharp detail and natural yellow-gold color. A few minor scuffs in the left obverse field preclude a full 65 grade but this coin is close, close, close...

An NGC MS64+ without CAC approval brought $12,925 as Heritage 12/13: 3872. The other PCGS MS64+ has never sold at auction.

The few Gems known of this date have been off the market for years and this lovely piece is for all intents and purposes the best available 1906-O eagle.

CAC has approved four in MS64 (including this one 64+) with two finer.
