UNUSUAL 1883-CC EAGLE
Variety 1-C.
This is a very unusual coin which was completely misunderstood by PCGS. It is a rare variety which employs a die pair which appears to have a "wavy" texture and which is never found completely struck up. In my opinion, this coin shows the luster and (lack of) wear to grade AU50 or higher but PCGS has misinterpreted the lack of detail for wear.
This variety is by far the rarest of the three known for the 1883-CC eagle and it is important for the advanced CC eagle collector or the collector who appreciates a rare and curious variety.
No PCGS VF35 1883-CC has sold at auction (which makes sense as this date didn't circulate as freely as the CC eagles from the 1870's). The only PCGS EF40 to sell in recent memory brought $2,820 as Heritage 6/15: 5341.
A really interesting piece for the advanced collector.
