EXCEPTIONAL PCGS/CAC 1871-CC EAGLE GRADED EF45

Variety 2-A.

For many collectors, the 1871-CC is the first Carson City date in the Liberty Head eagle set which is feasible, given the rarity of the first-year-of-issue 1870-CC. A total of 8,085 eagles dated 1871-CC were made of which an estimated 125 or so are known. This date is often seen in the VF-EF range as it circulated extensively and few survivors show natural color and choice surfaces.

I haven't seen every Extremely Fine1871-CC eagle which exists but I find it hard to imagine that a nicer one than this exists. This piece is a textbook "Choice EF" with nearly perfect surfaces below original, even greenish-gold color. Both sides show dirt in the protected areas and the eye appeal is just exceptional.

The last PCGS/CAC EF45 1871-CC eagle to sell at auction brought $15,275 as Stacks Bowers 11/13: 2221. That coin was very nice but the present piece is even choicer.

A wonderful, fresh-to-the-market 1871-CC eagle which deserves to reside in a top-flight collection of CC gold.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 3 finer (two in AU55 and one in MS62+).
