SCARCE 1857-S GOLD DOLLAR
Only four Type Three gold dollars were made at the San Francisco mint and the 1857-S is numismatically significant as the first of these. A total of 10,000 were made of which fewer than 200 exist, mostly in the EF45-AU55 range.
This strictly original example shows attractive deep natural green-gold color which changes to orange-gold at the border. The surfaces are very clean and both sides show dirt in the recesses.
No NGC AU53 1857-S gold dollar has sold at auction since Heritage 9/05: 4256 brought $1,610.
I cant think of many other short, completable sets that are more fun to assemble than San Francisco gold dollars.
