RARE AND POPULAR CIVIL WAR DATE 1865 GOLD DOLLAR

The 1865 is the second scarcest Civil War gold dollar after the 1863. This date is usually found one of two ways: in Superb Gem and as a miserable, low-eye appeal EF-AU. Affordable collector grade pieces are extremely hard to locate and are always in demand.

This light green-gold semi-prooflike example is somewhat scuffy in the obverse fields but it is strictly "new" with no friction on Liberty's cheek. It is well struck and it lacks the reverse dent-like clashmark above LL in DOLLAR as seen on some pieces.

No PCGS MS61 has ever sold at auction while the last NGC 61, a virtual twin to this coin, realized $3,450 as Heritage 1/11: 6672.

An affordable example of a date which is missing from most Civil War gold sets.
