RARE 1839-D HALF EAGLE

The numismatically significant 1839-D is the only Liberty Head half eagle with the mintmark on the obverse and it is a distinct one-year type. It is a scarce, popular issue which is pricey in high grades.

This russet-toned example is nearly a full EF in terms of sharpness (note the great wing detail on the reverse) but it is a bit “marky” on the obverse, especially the inner left field.

The last PCGS VF35 to sell at auction brought $3,738 all the way back in August 2007 and only two in this grade have crossed the block since early 2001.

An affordable example of this desirable date.
