CONDITIONALLY RARE PCGS/CAC 1892-CC HALF EAGLE GRADED MS63+
Nevada Collection pedigree; as identified by PCGS.
The 1892-CC half eagle is scarce in properly graded MS63/63+, and it is very rare finer than this. PCGS has graded just one finer (an MS64) and it brought $22,500 at a 2018 auction.
This high-end example is very choice for the grade with intense frosty luster and an absence of detracting marks as nearly always seen on this date. The obverse has rich orange-gold and rose color with a ring of deeper reddish color at the periphery; the reverse is a blend of lemon-gold and rose.
PCGS has graded only three 1892-CC half eagles in MS63+ with just one finer. Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5167—another coin in PCGS/CAC MS63+—realized $22,800.
This exceptional coin was formerly in the finest collection of Carson City gold ever assembled (the Nevada Collection, which morphed into the Battle Born Collection when I was replaced as its primary source in the mid-2000s) and it is likely in the Condition Census for the issue.
An important late date CC half eagle and essentially unimprovable for this issue.
Ex ANR 5/2005: 728 where it realized $5,520.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade (including two in 63+) with none finer.
