SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU55 1846-O, ex Fairmont

In terms of both its overall and high-grade rarity levels, the 1846-O is a scarcer issue than the 1845-O, and it is similar to the 1851-O half eagle.

This is a completely natural coin which sports medium green-gold hues on both sides. The strike is sharp while the surfaces lack any distinguishing abrasions.

In 2022, there were four PCGS/CAC AU55 1846-O half eagles offered at auction by Stack’s Bowers; all ex Fairmont. This exact coin had the lowest APR at $8,700 while the others brought $9,300, $10,200 and $10,281.

CAC has approved five in AU55 with just five finer (three in 58, one in 6 and another in 61).
