IMPORTANT PCGS MS61 1857-C HALF EAGLE
There are an estimated 12-15 Uncirculated examples of this date currently known, with most in the MS60 to MS62 range. Only a small handful of these are what I regard as being choice with natural color and with unmolested surfaces.
Warm natural honey-gold color covers both sides and while it is thick it fails to obscure the heavy underlying mint luster. The strike is sharp and there is a total absence of wear. The obverse is slightly marky but none of the aforementioned scuffs are deep and/or detracting.
This exact coin (see below) was the first PCGS MS61 1857-C half eagle to sell at auction since 2015.
I note that Stacks Bowers just sold a much-inferior PCGS/CAC MS61 1853-C $5 for $19,200 in their most recent sale.
Ex Stack’s Bowers 4/2022; 5085 ($21,600), Fairmont hoard.
