RARE CHOICE AU 1861-C HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

While not as famous as its counterpart the 1861-D, the 1861-C is actually the rarer of the two in high grades. I am aware of just two or three legitimately Uncirculated 1861-C half eagles and nearly every piece which I have seen graded AU58 is not choice.

This is likely the single finest of the "seven" 1861-C half eagles in PCGS 58 holders (I think there are actually four or so separate coins) and I actually like it more than many of the NGC MS61's I have seen. This example is well-made on a good quality planchet with tons of remaining luster atop choice surfaces. A thin obverse hairline runs down from the chin and is easily overlookable.

The last PCGS AU58 1861-C half eagle to sell at auction realized $14,950 all the way back in March 2007 and a CAC approved AU58 from either service has never been sold at auction.

This is one of the more important coins in this collection.

CAC has approved 3 in AU58 with just 1 finer (MS63).
