RARE PCGS/CAC 1862-S QUARTER EAGLE

Of the three San Francisco quarter eagles struck during the Civil War, the 1862-S and 1863-S are very close in overall rarity but the 1862-S appears to be slightly rare in high grades (AU55 and above). There are well under 100 known in all grades including three or four in Uncirculated, led by a PCGS MS63+ which I purchased for $43,700 in February 2012.

This is a classic "gem slider" with the appearance of a Choice Uncirculated but with just the barest trace of friction seen on the obverse high spots. Both sides show nice medium russet-gold color with a few darker areas seen about the obverse rim.

The only other CAC approved PCGS AU58 1863-S quarter eagle to sell at auction realized $8,625 as Heritage 10/11: 4714. Since May 2003, there are just three records of sale for this date in AU58.

This is one of my favorite coins in this collection and I recommend it highly to an advanced quarter eagle specialist.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 2 finer.
