CHOICE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU53 1851-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 31-U.

The 1851-D is a scarcer Dahlonega half eagle which is challenging to locate in the lower AU grades with original color and choice surfaces. In addition, many examples are poorly struck and some even have a faint or nearly non-existent mintmark.

This is a very choice piece with natural deep green-gold color which is exactly right for this issue. Both sides show dirt within the recesses and a good deal of luster is present beneath the color. The strike is much sharper than usual for the issue with nearly full definition at the centers while the surfaces lack any significant marks save for a small dig to the left of the first 1 in the date.

In their 2023 ANA auction, Stack’s Bowers sold another PCGS/CAC AU53 for $6,000. In my opinion, that coin was nicer than the one I’m offering here.

This is a superior coin for the grade and it is not easy to locate an 1851-D half eagle with better overall eye appeal.

CAC has approved four in this grade with 15 finer.
