The 1890-CC is among the more available double eagles from this mint. It is becoming very hard to locate in the higher AU grades, especially with natural color and surfaces.
This pleasing natural orange-gold example has a good appearance for the date and grade. The surfaces show more luster than generally seen on AU55 coins and there are no overly deep or detracting marks. Some contrasting color on the highlights attests to the originality. The eye appeal is excellent.
Four non-CAC NGC AU55′s all sold for $4,700 in Heritage auctions between October and December 2014. An NGC AU55 with CAC approval realized $5,288 as Heritage 11/14: 3410.
A nice piece for the grade and a good coin to use for type purposes.
CAC has approved 36 in this grade with 51 finer.
