The 1890-CC is one of the most available Carson City double eagles. It is also one of the more affordable–at least in circulated grades–which makes it an ideal choice for a type coin.
This medium orange-gold example is mostly frosty with some prooflike flashes in the recesses of the obverse. There is a good amount of “body” remaining but just a few too many tiny ticks to grade it a full AU55. The naked-eye appearance is very pleasing for the grade.
In 2014, there have been four NGC AU53 1890-CC double eagles sold at auction, none of which have had CAC approval. These coins have sold from prices ranging from a low of $3,525 to a high of $4,259.
For less than four thousand dollars, this is as nice a CC double eagle as you are likely to find.
CAC has approved 16 in this grade with 79 finer.
