The 1889-CC is one of the more available Carson City double eagles but it is much harder to find than the really common issues such as the 1876-CC, 1884-CC and 1890-CC. It is scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in Uncirculated with almost none available higher than the MS61 to MS62 range.
This fresh-to-the-market example is truly the epitome of a “gem slider” with the naked=eye appearance of an MS62 coin. It is extremely clean and very original with lovely surfaces, delicate natural orange-gold color and just a touch of rub on the cheek of Liberty. If you are going to pay the going rate for an AU58 1889-CC double eagle, you might as well get a coin that truly looks like an AU58!
So far in 2014, Heritage has auctioned two non-CAC NGC AU58 examples for $8,813 and $11,163, respectively. The present coin is considerably nicer than either of these.
This is one of the nicer AU58 Carson City double eagles I have handled in the last year.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with none finer.
