This “gem slider” has the look and eye appeal of a coin graded much higher but not the five-figure price tag. It has remarkably choice surfaces that have somehow escaped the dense abrasions so often seen on this date; this is likely the result of not having been shipped in a bag to an overseas source. The obverse is a medium orange-gold hue while the reverse is darker and shows areas of rich crimson, mostly at the periphery.
The last PCGS AU58 to 1889-CC double eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 2/12: 5044; it brought $7,475 and wasn’t approved by CAC. This is the best quality available for this date at a sub-five figure price, and it is among the nicer AU58 CC double eagles of any date that I have handled this year.
