The 1888 double eagle is not easily located in properly graded MS62, it is scarce in MS63 and it is very rare in MS64 and above. It is not often seen with natural color and choice surfaces.
This very high end example is lightly marked and it shows beautiful rich orange-gold and rose-green hues with some darkening on the devices. A few scuffs in the left field limit the grade but I have seen inferior 1888 double eagles in MS63 holders (and with $9,000-11,000 price tags).
The last three PCGS MS62 examples to sell at auction (none had CAC approval) brought $3,290, $4,700 and $3,829, respectively.
For most Type Three collectors, a nice PCGS MS62/CAC is all the 1888 double eagle they will need.
CAC has approved 10 in this grade with three finer (all MS63).
