The 1877-S is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Type Three double eagle made at the San Francisco mint. It is available in MS60 to MS61 but it is scarce in properly graded MS62 and very rare in MS63 and above. If available, a PCGS MS63 example with CAC approval would bring over $20,000.

This is an attractive, fresh coin which was graded many years ago. It is undipped and original with scattered light marks on the lustrous surfaces. Both sides show nice medium green-gold, rose and orange shadings and the reverse is very choice, grading at least MS63 to MS63+ on its own. This date tends to come very abraded and the quality of the surfaces on this example are far above average.

The all-time auction record for an MS62 1877-S was set by Heritage 4/13: 6020 which brought a strong $8,225; it was not approved by CAC but I thought it was quite choice. A PCGS MS62 with CAC approval sold for $7,475 at auction in 2012.

For the Type Three collector, this represents great value and no PCGS MS63 has sold since the beginning of 2010.

CAC has approved 10 in this grade with none finer.
