SCARCE CHOICE AU 1867-S DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1867-S is the second scarcest Type Two double eagle from this mint after the 1866-S With Motto. Its rarity profile fits that of the typical early San Francisco Type Two: scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and rare in Uncirculated with very few known above the MS60 to MS61 range.
This piece shows nice natural color with deep russet hues contrasted by darker relief details. There is some underlying luster and the surfaces are cleaner than usual for the date and grade. As always on this issue, the central obverse is not fully brought up, leaving weakness on the curls.
The last NGC AU55 1867-S double eagle to sell at auction brought $4,406 as Stacks Bowers 7/15: 6110.
AU55 seems like the best value grade for this issue as higher graded 1867-S double eagles–if available–are pricey.
CAC has approved 14 in this grade with 24 finer.
