Small Mintmark variety.
With the discovery of hundreds of choice examples in the S.S. Brother Jonathan shipwreck, the formerly rare 1865-S double eagle can now be found in grades as high as MS63 to MS65.
This is a “textbook” Choice AU Type One double eagle with natural orange-gold color, a good amount of luster for the grade and no serious marks. I have seen worse examples graded AU58.
There has not been a PCGS AU55 example of this date sold at auction since Heritage 1/10: 4124, which brought $3,163. Since then, the market for all Type One double eagle has increased, especially for Civil War issues such as this 1865-S.
