While not held in as high regard as the 1862 and 1863, the 1864 is another scarce Civil War double eagle from the Philadelphia mint and it is an issue that I actually handle less frequently than I do the 1863.
This evenly worn example shows light russet and green color with some flashes of reflectiveness seen in the protected areas. There are scattered abrasions in the fields as is typical for the date with the most notable of these positioned in the center of the left obverse.
The last PCGS EF45 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 2/14: 5520 which just brought $8,813.
According to my records, this is the first 1864 double eagle that I have handled in over a year; a period in which I’ve sold multiple 1862-P and 1863-P twenties.
