CAC/PCGS AU 58 1863-S DOUBLE EAGLE
While formerly a rare date in this grade (and even more so in Uncirculated), the 1863-S is now available due to shipwreck finds. But most higher grade 1863-S double eagles are unattractive due to matte-like surfaces or splotchy color and the present example is notable for its natural surfaces.
This choice “slider” exhibits no real wear but there is enough bag friction on the face of Liberty and in the fields to properly designate this as fully Mint State. Both sides show thick, natural luster and are toned in pleasing orange-gold hues. There is a small mint-made grease stain on the reverse running through the bottom of the shield.
The last CAC approved AU58 1863-S double eagle to sell at auction was the NGC Newman V: 3325 coin which sold for $5,875 in November, 2014.
A better value, in my opinion, than an MS61 example of this Civil War date which would double in price.
CAC has approved 23 in AU58 with 14 finer.
