The 1861 is by far the most available Civil War double eagle from Philadelphia. It is easy to locate in circulated grades but it is not often seen in MS61 to MS62, especially with natural color and surfaces. In MS63 and above, it is rare as are all non-shipwreck Type One double eagles.

Many Type One double eagles graded MS61 have negative eye appeal due to excessive abrasions but this is not the case with this coin. Other than a few contact marks on Liberty’s face, the surfaces are clean and it appears that this piece has never been cleaned or dipped as it shows rich, even green-gold and orange colors. The strike is exceptionally sharp and this is truly a fresh, pleasing example for the date and grade.

The last 1861 double eagle in MS61 to sell at auction was an NGC piece with CAC approval which brought $8,813 as Heritage 8/13: 5198.

This is the best available quality for this date at less than $10,000 and if you are a serious collector of Civil War gold or Type One double eagles, you will realize the importance of this offering.
