Normal Mintmark. Variety 16-I.  The 1846-D half eagle is known with a normal mintmark and a D over D variety. While not as well known as its counterpart, the Normal Mintmark is actually a scarcer coin. It is tied for the tenth rarest of 26 half eagles from this mint and it is the sixth rarest in high grades.

This date is very hard to locate with natural color and surfaces. The present example is choice and original with deep, even russet and green-gold hues. The strike is sharp with better detail than usual at the centers and the surfaces show just a few small marks, the most prominent of which is located below ER in AMERICA.

In the last five years there have been only five problem-free AU53 examples sold at auction, ranging from a low of $3,450 to a high of $4,169.

It is my opinion that choice, original examples of this issue are undervalued.
