The 1846-D Normal Mintmark half eagle is among the scarcer half eagles from this mint and, along with the 1848-D, it is the most undervalued from this decade. It is almost never seen above AU50 to AU53.
This is an above-average coin for the date with splashes of medium honey gold atop surfaces which show a bit of luster. There are a few small marks in the fields, none of which are terribly detracting. A small toning spot near the base of star two ismint-made and serves as identification.
Only four AU50 examples have sold at auction since the Summer of 2007. The last APR is Goldberg 2/11: 2128, slabbed by PCGS, which brought $3,105.
It is hard to locate nice examples of this scarcer issue for less than $3,000.
