The 1844-O is the most available No Motto half eagle from this mint and it is the only date which is seen, from time to time, in higher grades. That said, it is still scarce in properly graded MS61 and higher with natural color and surfaces.
This is a superb example for the grade with exceptional deep natural yellow-gold and greenish hues on both sides. The strike is absolutely hammered with full definition at the centers and borders and both sides show lovely hard frosty luster. A few small scuffs in the left obverse field limit the grade but this coin has wonderful eye appeal.
The last PCGS MS61 1844-O half eagle to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece, ex Heritage 1/12: 6346, which I purchased for $4,600. There have been just three PCGS MS61′s sold at auction since march 2004 and none with CAC approval.
If you are looking for one great No Motto half eagle from this mint, this 1844-O is a perfect choice.
CAC has approved just this one example in MS61 with seven finer.
