The 1844-O is the most available No Motto half eagle from the New Orleans mint. It is only moderately scarce in properly graded AU58 but it is not often seen with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is a well struck, frosty “slider” with rich natural orange-gold color. The appearance resembles that seen on an MS61 to MS62 but there is some minor friction in the fields and a few light old scratches visible below magnification.
Only two PCGS AU58 examples of this date have sold at auction since March 2007. The last auction appearance was this coin in August 2011 (see below).
A very attractive coin with a great pedigree.
