SOLD – $5.00 – 1844-D PCGS AU53 CAC
Serial Number 8221.53/28092782
PCGS Lookup Number 8221
The 1844-D is a scarcer half eagle than the 1843-D and 1845-D but it is seen less often than the 1846-D, 1847-D and 1848-D. It is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range and properly graded AU53 to AU58 examples with original color and nice surfaces have become difficult to locate.
This choice, lustrous green-gold example has the body and appearance of an AU55 but it shows just a few too many small handling marks in the fields to grade it as such. There are a few clusters of abrasions in the fields but none are worthy of mention. The eye appeal is well above average for the grade.
The only PCGS AU53 examples of this date to sell at auction since 2006 was this exact coin which last brought $3,850 as DLRC 9/13: 1328.
A perfect Dahlonega half eagle for the collector who wants a single better quality example at a reasonable price.
CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
