The 1844-D is one of the more common Dahlonega half eagles. It is, however, hard to find withy natural color and surfaces.

This piece shows pleasing deep natural green-gold color. It has the luster and “meat” of an AU55 but it has been graded AU50 by PCGS due to some old reeding marks on the face of Liberty and a few light scuffs in the fields. Still, the coin has a great look and it is a welcome exception to the typical scrubbed example that one sees offered for sale.

The last PCGS AU50 example of this date brought $4,600 as Heritage 4/12: 6581. There have been a total of seven in this grade sold at auction since the end of 2005.

A coin with real charm and character and, as such, a perfect piece for the sophisticated date or type collector.

CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
