At one point in time, the 1844-C was believed to have been one of the absolute rarest half eagles from this mint. It is still the sixth most difficult to find (of 24 struck) but it is slightly more available now in higher grades than in the past. I am aware of around seven to nine Uncirculated examples with the best being a group of three pieces which grade MS63 or so.
This fresh-appearing example has been off the market for many years and it is a Die State two with a reverse crack as described in my Charlotte book. The luster is soft and frosty with nice light greenish and yellow-gold hues. There is a small spot on the obverse near the right edge of star five and a few ticks in the fields which are consistent with the assigned grade.
The last NGC MS61 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 1/12: 4885 which brought $12,650. In 2010, Bowers and Merena sold a PCGS MS61 in their February auction for $14,375. There are only three records for MS61′s since the summer of 2002.
Uncirculated examples of this date are seldom offered for sale except at auction and this is a rare opportunity for the advanced Charlotte half eagle specialist to acquire an impressive Condition Census quality 1844-C.
