1842-D half eagles are known with Small Date and Large Date varieties. The latter is by far the scarcer of the two but the Small Date is no0t common in properly graded AU53 to AU55, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
In the recent Burr Ridge collection sale of choice Dahlonega half eagles, I offered a PCGS/CAC AU55 example of this variety and it sold quickly. The collector who bought that coin turned around and sold me this piece and it is a really choice coin with even, natural green-gold color atop clean, natural surfaces.
Only two PCGS AU53 examples of this variety have sold at auction since 2006 and the last realized $4,994 as Stacks Bowers 2/13: 4200.
CAC has approved just this one in AU53 with four finer.
