Small Date variety.
Varieties of 1842-D half eagle are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The former is by far the more available of the two. It is typically seen in VF and EF grades and it is scarce in properly grade AU55, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is a nice, visually appealing coin with rich russet color on the obverse and reverse. The surfaces show an average number of abrasions and it is exceedingly hard to find this variety with smooth, unmarked fields.
Only three AU55′s have sold at auction since 10/08 and all are NGC graded. The most recent record was Heritage 1/14: 6636 which brought $4,113.
This is the first nice 1842-D Small Date half eagle I have handled in quite a while.
