The 1841-C is not as scarce as the 1840-C but it is seen much less often than the 1842-C Large Date and the 1843-C. IT is one of the hardest early date half eagles from this mint to find with original color and surfaces.

This fresh-to-the-market piece is a “gem” for the grade with an obverse which I feel is a full AU50 to AU50+; the revers is just a hair less choice. The color is superb with very deep natural green gold on the obverse; the reverse is a tiny bit lighter with flashes of rich reddish-gold outlining the device and lettering. Both sides are very clean and there is good overall detail at the centers. The eye appeal is well above-average for the date and grade.

In Heritage’s 8/12 sale, a PCGS EF45 1841-C half eagle with CAC brought $2,703. In their 7/12 sale, another PCGS EF45 with CAC approval (this one in an old green label holder) brought $3,450. In my opinion, neither of these were as nice as the present example.

If you collect Charlotte half eagles and you appreciate originality, you will seriously like this coin.

CAC has approved four in this grade with five finer.
