CAC APPROVED CHOICE AU 1838 HALF EAGLE
The 1838 is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for Philadelphia Classic Head half eagles. This date is scarcer than the 1834 Plain 4, 1835 and 1836 and it has a distinctive appearance with entirely different milling than the other P Mint issues of this type.
This is a pleasing mid-range AU example with even, natural russet color over lustrous, lightly worn surfaces. Small shallow mark on the neck of Liberty does not detract and is mentioned for the sake of accuracy.
The last CAC approved AU55 1838 half eagle was a PCGS coin which sold for $2,820 as Heritage 11/12: 4926.
An affordable but decidedly above-average 1838 half eagle.
