McCloskey 3-C. Second Head, Large Date.
The 1836 is the second most common Classic Head half eagle after the 1834 Plain 4. It is not often seen in grades higher than MS61 to MS62, however, and choice, original examples in this range are scarcer than believed.
This choice, frosty example has rich natural yellow-gold color with some deepening of the hues at the obverse border. There are just a few too many marks seen on both sides to grade this an MS62 but it is clearly high end for an MS61. The strike is sharp and the eye appeal is well above average.
It is interesting to note that no PCGS MS61′s have sold at auction since Bowers and Merena 11/09: 3687, which brought $4,140 and was not approved by CAC.
Classic Head half eagles are always in demand as type coins and this piece would be perfect for the collector seeking a date other than the ubiquitous 1834 Plain 4 in an affordable Uncirculated grade.
CAC has approved just this one example in MS61 with six finer.
