AFFORDABLE 1810 LARGE DATE LARGE 5 HALF EAGLE
BD-4, R-2.
The 1810 Large date Large 5 half eagle is an available issue in the Bust Left half eagle series which gets no date premium. As such, it is in demand as a type coin. Most seen in collector grades have problems and, ironically, this issue (and the entire type) is more readily available in AU than it is in VF-EF.
This coin has a very pleasing appearance for the grade and it certainly seems closer to EF40 in terms of sharpness than the current assigned grade. The surfaces show some old marks which are mostly toned over by the deep, attractive russet hues seen on both sides.
No PCGS straight graded 1810 half eagle has ever sold at auction in a holder lower than EF45 Heritage 6/14: 4820, graded EF40 by NGC, was less sharp than the present piece and it sold rather cheaply at $5,288.
At this price point, it is nearly impossible to buy a problem-free piece of early gold, especially one graded by PCGS.
