BD-4, R-2. Large Date, Large 5.
No less than four distinct varieties of 1810 half eagle are known. Two are extremely rare and two are common with the most available being the Large Date, Large 5. As with all early gold, it is very hard to find affordable examples that are still high quality.
This evenly worn example is notable for its lovely rich reddish-gold hues which are deepest at the borders. There are no significant marks seen on either the obverse or the reverse and for the date and grade, the eye appeal is far above average.
No PCGS EF40 examples of this variety have sold at auction for close to two decades. In Heritage’s 4/13 auction, a non-CAC example graded EF45 went reasonably at $5,581.
At this price point, you would be hard-pressed to find a finer Capped Bust Left type half eagle.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with 49 finer.
