BD-4, R-2. Large Date, Large 5 variety. This is the most available of the four distinct varieties known for 1810 half eagles. It is around twice as available as the next most common, the Small Date, Tall 5.
This is one of the most original examples of a Capped Bust Left half eagle that you are likely to find. It shows beautiful rich green-gold, rose and orange hues with the reverse a bit deeper than the obverse. It is well made and very frosty with a good quality planchet and exceptional eye appeal. I feel that the assigned grade is conservative but NGC’s logic, I’m assuming, is based on the presence of some old marks in the obverse fields that are mostly concealed by the natural toning. I have seen many inferior examples of this type in MS61 and even MS62 holders.
This type tends to be overlooked as it falls between the popular Capped Bust Right design of 1795-1807 and the enigmatic Capped Head Left issues of 1813-1834. What I like about the Capped Bust Left half eagles is that they are short-lived (1807-1812) and they represent one of the few early gold series that can actually be completed.
