GEM SLIDER 1808 HALF EAGLE
BD-3, R-4
Varieties of 1808 half eagle are known for a normal date and an 1808/7 overdate. For the normal date, die varieties exist with a Normal 5D (BD-3) and a Wide 5D (BD-4). As a date, the 1808 is reasonably common in circulated grades but probably no more than 5-10% of the remaining pieces in the higher AU range are choice and original.
This coin is notable for its stunning deep natural reddish-gold color, which is most prevalent at the right obverse and across much of the reverse. There is light circulation seen only the high spots and a few small ticks on the obverse; the reverse is clean and choice. This piece was struck from clashed dies and this can be seen on both sides beneath the aforementioned toning. The eye appeal is excellent.
Only one PCGS AU58 1808 half eagle has sold at auction since January 2012 and it brought $9,988 as Heritage 1/15: 7036; it was not approved by CAC. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval realized $11,750 as Newman V: 3282 in November, 2014.
Nice circulated early gold of this quality is always in demand and this would make a perfect Capped Bus Left half eagle for the type collector.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 14 finer.
