BD-3, R-4. The Capped Head Right type was struck from 1795 through 1807. The dates from 1800 to 1807 are usually lumped together but I find that the 1803/2 tends to be a bit harder to locate than the 1802/1, 1806 Round 6 and 1807 although it brings no premium.
This lustrous, well-defined example has warm golden-orange and russet colors, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and the reverse. It shows the weakness at the central obverse that is diagnostic for this variety while the corresponding reverse is actually quite sharp. There is not much evidence of circulation with just some moderate wear on the high spots and the quality of the planchet is excellent.
For some reason, the 1803/2 is almost never seen in AU53 and there are no APR’s for this date in this grade since July 2009. For many collectors, AU53 to AU55 is the perfect “sweet spot” for early gold as it represents nice cosmetic quality couplred with comparable affordability.
