CAC APPROVED MS62 1802/1 HALF EAGLE

BD-8, R-4.

The 1802/1 half eagle is similar in rarity to the 1803/2. It is common in circulated grades and available from time to time in the lowest Uncirculated range. In properly graded MS62 it is very scarce and it becomes rare in MS63 and above. For many date and type collectors, a nice MS62 is the best value grade for this issue as this level represents the best available quality at a relatively affordable price point.

Unlike many early half eagles in MS62 holders, this example is unequivocally “new” with no luster breaks or friction on the high spots. It is well struck with pleasing yellow-gold color on the obverse and reverse. There are no detracting marks and many of the disturbances in the left obverse field are, in fact, mint-made clashmarks as is common for this variety.

No CAC approved MS62 1802/1 half eagle has crossed the auction block since a PCGS piece brought $21,850 as Heritage 12/08: 1972.

An excellent selection for a type set of early gold!

CAC has approved nine in this grade with nine finer.
