By 1887, there was little demand for this denomination and many of the 6,000 business strikes of this year were either melted soon after or were kept by contemporary collectors, dealers and hoarders. This lustrous slider shows no evidence of having been in circulation but there is just enough friction on the high spots to righfully grade it AU58. Both sides are clean and show nice medium rose and russet colors. A virtually identical NGC AU58, without a CAC sticker, brought $3,335 as Heritage 3/11: 4725.
This is the only 1887 Three Dollar gold piece in this grade to have been approved by CAC.
