Only 900 examples were struck and this is certainly one of the few gold coins which are still affordable despite this small issuance. The 1883 is more available than one might think given its tiny mintage but it is still a reasonably difficult coin to find in the higher AU grades.
This is a late strike which lacks the deep, reflective fields seen on some 1883 business strikes. It has surfaces which contain a blend of reflectiveness and frost with soft, even yellow-gold hues seen on both sides. There is a smidgen of wear on the obverse; the reverse is free of friction and is quite choice.
The last PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 4/13: 5713. It brought $3,290 and was characterized by blotchy orange coloration.
