Old Green Holder. By today’s standards, I grade this coin at least AU53 and possibly a touch finer.
Only 900 business strikes were made. This date tended to be saved, unlike the low mintage 1881 and it is less rare than one might expect. Still, it is one of a handful of United States gold coins with a mintage figure of fewer than 1,000 and it is certainly amongst the most affordable of these.
Evenly worn and still retaining some luster, this coin is nicely toned with medium orange-gold hues heaviest in the fields. The surfaces are lightly marked and a small grease spot below the first A in AMERICA is mint-made.
Only three auction appearances for PCGS AU50 examples of this date have been recorded since May 2004.
CAC has approved this one example in AU50 with 25 finer.
