SCARCE LOW MINTAGE 1872 THREE DOLLAR
Only 2,000 business strike 1872 three dollar gold pieces were made and this date is not often seen with signs of extensive circulation.
This piece shows perfect, even wear and its lack of marks and nice even russet color suggest that it may have been kept as a pocket piece at one time. I can’t recall more than a small handful of comparable 1872 Threes and this is certainly an uncommonly affordable example.
There are no recent auction comparables for a PCGS VF35 1872 three dollar.
CAC has approved this one in VF35 with another 22 in grades higher.
